Kinja'd!!!

I finally got a DSLR camera!

I've been wanting one for a while, but the prices of most modern DSLR cameras had made me reconsider it for a while, but I decided to start looking at older, used cameras, and I found one. Managed to pick up a used Canon Rebel XT for about 180 dollars, and that was for a kit not just the body. Not a bad price for a starter camera. It takes some pretty amazing pictures, I'll post some up later this week.

Me too! Some years ago. I haven't used it for ages because the best camera is the one you have with you and that's usually a potato.

Yeah, I don't doubt I'll still be using my phone camera, but I'm a pretty tech oriented guy and I usually carry my stuff around with me if I know there will be something worthy of that piece of tech where I'm going. Pretty much if I go anywhere except work I always bring a second camera with me, what I plan on using this for is family outings and things like Cars and Coffee, track days, things like that where you really need a good camera to get the best picture

Yeah, I'm looking at getting this one http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00004THD0/… because you always need a good longer lense

And then this one for up close shots http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00005K47X/…

Yeah, a DSLR can get REALLY expensive really quick, my Dad has one of the higher end Nikon's and it cost him about 3k. I got lucky though, I took my time really looking for deals, and ended up paying only 233 for the camera and accessories.

Good on you for picking out a fast 50 mm prime lens—now I don't have to recommend it :) I bought a MF f/1.8 50 mm prime for my Nikon for $40 and couldn't be happier with it.

Also good thinking on the telephoto, this will really come in handy in automotive applications such as trackside photography. An AF zoom telephoto lens is next on my list (I have a MF one but AF makes panning much easier) so that my race photos stop looking like this:

taken on the kit lens, all the way zoomed in @ 55 mm

Have fun and keep us updated! If you got a flickr lemme know and also check out photography.kinja!

I got another lens for my birthday that costs just about what you paid for everything, maybe just a little less.

Yeah that's what I've discovered in researching these things, is the kit isn't the problem when it comes to price it's those damn lenses. You know of a good fisheye lens for a canon?

The 10.5 Canon or what ever. Its on the Canon site. Yeah lenses are terribly expensive. There are lenses I want that are well into 4 figures.

Yeah, I'm trying to get my bases covered right now for most applications, I've got a 18-55 mm on my camera right now, it's pretty good, but it's more of a general use lens it seems, but I've got some good pictures out of it so far.

Still is a good looking picture. I don't have a flickr yet but I'll be making one, what's your flickr? I'll probably make one today and add you

Yeah, it gets pretty crazy. I remember seeing one of those lenses they use for wildlife photography, cost over $10,000 and weighed 26 pounds.

Congratulations. Good starter kit. Things definitely get pricey quick. Pretty much any camera can enable the photographer to get good pictures given the right situation, newer/better cameras just increase the situations that will work.
